Season 2 Episode 2: with ASNT on AI Music and Holograms on Tour

Artificial intelligence in music is gaining worldwide popularity, and musicians (especially independent musicians) are hotly debating the future of the music industry. Artists seldom receive adequate payment for their hard work and talent as it is, and now we are looking at non-human-generated content?

So when I asked ASNT, a brilliant California band, to come onto “Let’s Talk About The Music, a Music Talk Show,” during its time on 88.1 the ‘Burg, they jumped at the opportunity and chose topics that are on everyone’s mind: AI music and holograms on tour. Super bonus: we got to know the band, too!

Before I dive into their interview, let's take a look at the history. You might be surprised how long AI music and the illusion of holograms have been around.

Allow Me to Present the Beginnings…

In the 1800s, live performance illusions began with stage tricks like Pepper’s Ghost. Professor John Henry Pepper, an English scientist, used mirrors, glass, and light to create ghost-like figures on stage. Audiences were fascinated by presence without a physical body.

Live performance illusions

Whatever it is, the way you tell your story online can make all the difference.

Then in the 1950s–1970s, technology enters music.

Early computers and synthesizers generate sound, and machines assist music creation for the first time. Technology shifts from playback to participation.

Technology's Influence on Music

In the 1990s–2000s, virtual performers emerge.

Digital and animated artists gain mainstream acceptance. Performers don’t need a physical body to connect with fans, and this sets the foundation for virtual and AI-driven performances.

Early 2020s: Holograms go mainstream.

Tupac Shakur’s hologram at Coachella (2012) changes public perception. Holograms appear at award shows and tribute events, and the conversation shifts from “cool tech” to ethics and legacy. Digital avatars combine with live musicians, and ABBA Voyage showcases artist-controlled use of technology.

Now AI enters the picture.

Artificial intelligence assists in songwriting, production, and vocals. AI also helps recreate performances for live tours and raises new questions around consent, ownership, and authenticity.

Where We Are Now

AI and holograms are already part of live music, but artists, fans, and the industry are still debating:
What counts as “live”?
Who controls the artist’s image?
Where should the line be drawn?

AI and holograms aren’t the future—they’re already here. The real question is how working musicians feel about where this is heading.

How Much AI Music is in the World Today?

Even after exhaustive research, I can’t produce a precise official count of AI-assisted songs, because music and tech are constantly evolving and expanding. However, a partial list of on-air music would include Suno, Udio, ElevenLabs Music, AIVA, Mubert, BandLab, Beatoven, Soundraw, Mureka, and Loudly.

There are many others, and what you may not know is that 60% of musicians already use AI tools in some fashion—from mastering, composing, arranging, or generating melodies. AI-assisted music is constantly being uploaded onto platforms like Deezer, and around 18% of new daily uploads might be fully AI-generated.

Holograms aren't as widespread as AI-assisted music—yet. The technology is still quite limited and very expensive to use, but we can be certain to experience more of it as the tech evolves and advances.

Who is ASNT?

ASNT is a female-fronted, dark, hard rock band from Lake Forest, Orange County, CA. The core founders are Christina and Bruce Baldwin, a husband-and-wife team on vocals and guitar. They recently added John Anderson on bass and Steve Stafford on drums.

ASNT is known for their emotional, thought-provoking songs, with dark tones and powerful female vocals, and has been described as having a progressive flair with heavy riffs and frenetic drumming. Their sound blends intensity with atmosphere, creating music that feels both heavy and deeply personal.

What sets ASNT apart is their ability to tell stories through their music—drawing listeners in with strong lyrical themes, dynamic instrumentation, and a sound that pushes beyond traditional hard rock boundaries. Whether on stage or in the studio, they bring a level of passion and energy that connects with audiences and leaves a lasting impression.

Fans of bands like Halestorm, Evanescence, and In This Moment will find something familiar in ASNT’s powerful vocals and dark, high-energy sound—while still experiencing something uniquely their own.

This is what made the conversation on Lets Talk About The Music so compelling—ASNT brings both musical depth and real perspective to topics like AI in music and holograms on tour.
