LTATM Community Connects:
Old Skool in Ellensburg

After I arrived in Ellensburg, WA, in September to continue my education, I walked the downtown area checking out the local music scene. I had come from Tacoma/Seattle where Pacific Northwest music is on fire. We unfortunately lost many venues during and after COVID, but the community seeks to promote and support local artists as much as possible. Now that I am in Ellensburg, my natural first question was, where can I find live music in my new location? As I checked nearby bars and wineries, one name kept popping up as a must-visit:

Carol from Old Skool located on
308 N Main Street,
Ellensburg, WA.

Carol has been providing free performing space for local and touring bands for over two decades and is an integral part of the Ellensburg music scene. I was invited to attend Old Skool’s 20th Anniversary Concert, which was my first live show in the area. It featured the following musicians:

Noel Henry, a contemporary country musician who sings deeply from the heart and soul.

The Flat Rocks

The Flat Rocks, promoted as an “alt-cow-surf-a-folk-billy-post-jazz-country-punk-modern-nostalgic-walk down the future retrospective with hints of hip-hop and/or metal.” Isn’t that awesome? They are a mostly original band, which “may or may not” be rooted in R&B, Jazz, Classical, or eastern forms of music — but definitely incorporates Rock-n-Roll.

Robber’s Roost, described as "Swing-Time/Rag-Folk." Robber's Roost is a touring act from Eastern Washington which interestingly also does drone cinematography and photography, music videos and more.

Robber's Roost Band

Star Anna, a PNW musician/singer/songwriter.

The concert was suitable for all ages and offered entry by donation! Check out the link for a sample of the incredible music.

I was fortunately able to interview Carol in a special presentation I call LTATM Community Connects. It offers a quick and enjoyable way to get to know Carol and the Old Skool store she runs all on her own. I had a great time chatting with Old Skool’s dedicated and entertaining owner, so do yourself a favor and visit the interview video.

Note that there will be a benefit concert for Carol on Saturday, December 13, kicking off at 3 PM at the Ridge (404 N Pine Street in downtown Ellensburg). Old Skool is moving to a new location! Local musicians are pulling together an unbelievable lineup to help Carol fund the transfer. Check out the Facebook announcement by Jason Clifton of Six Gun.

Here’s the crucial information so you can check out the (current) place yourself, and don’t forget to hit the benefit concert!
