Episode 21: Buzzed and Loaded — AI Music

Episode Summary:

Our brave new world features computers which can write, produce, and even sing entire songs. Should indie musicians be excited or terrified? Ep. 21 tackles one of the hot topics of the day: AI-generated music. The epic Seattle band, Buzzed and Loaded, sits down with Shels to unpack the good, the bad, and the futuristic regarding artificial intelligence in the music and movie industries.

Quick History of AI in Music:

While the phenomenon of AI in music is rapidly growing, it’s not a brand-new trend.

  • Back in the 1950s, a guy named Lejaren Hiller used computers to help compose classical pieces. It was basic, but it kicked off the idea of machines making music.

  • In the 1980s and 90s, we saw early algorithmic music and MIDI tech emerge. This let computers help with music composition, but they still needed lots of human assistance.

  • Then in the 2010s, machine learning kicked things into high gear. Platforms like OpenAI’s Jukebox, Google’s Magenta, Amper Music, and AIVA started letting people create full-on tracks — from beats to melodies — with just a few inputs.

  • Fast forward to now, and AI-generated vocals are blowing up. People are cloning voices of real artists like Drake and The Weeknd, dropping AI collab tracks, and going viral. Some artists are embracing it; others are freaking out.

And it’s not just music — in one AI-fueled movie magic moment, it gave Val Kilmer his voice back for Top Gun: Maverick. Obviously, artificial intelligence’s impact on culture and industry is only beginning. So, where do we go from here?

Buzzed and Loaded’s Personal Take:

Andy (bass), Rob (guitar and vocals), and Buzz (drums) have been jamming the PNW with their original (NON-computer generated) songs for years. They let Shels hit them with one AI question after another:

  • What was your honest reaction to the first AI-generated song you heard?

  • Have you used AI in any form in your music?

  • Do you think AI can ever truly replace the “human touch” in music?

  • What do you think about AI cloning artist’s voices? Creative boom or copyright nightmare?

  • Who will AI hit the hardest: the corporate music industry or the indie artists?

Shels and band go on to discuss fan reactions to AI influence, AI collaboration vs. competition, and ownership issues with AI-generated content — is it the artist or the software developers?

You do not want to miss this episode as we explore a hot-button issue with real talk, lots of laughs, and a little bit of “what if the machines take over our playlists?”
