LTATM EP 19: Women Empowerment + Spotlight:
Creative Women of the PNW

In Episode 19, we shine a spotlight on women empowerment in music — a conversation built around strength, vulnerability, creativity, and the powerful role women play in shaping the independent music scene.

Two incredible PNW musicians join Shels for this discussion: solo artist Meghanne Storey and Sunny Loudin of Sunrust. Together, they explore the realities women face both on and off the stage.

Meghanne Storey

Award winning singer songwriter - Alt/Folk/Rock with an Indy Pop Twist.

Meghanne Storey — A Creative Voice in the PNW

As part of Let’s Talk About The Music’s spotlight on creative women of the Pacific Northwest, Meghanne Storey represents the passion, resilience, and artistry that continue to shape the region’s music community.

Through her work and presence in the scene, Meghanne brings a perspective rooted in creativity and dedication — balancing artistry, collaboration, and the evolving music landscape. Like many independent artists in the PNW, her journey reflects what it takes to build something meaningful while staying true to your voice.

What stands out most is her commitment to growth — both as an artist and as part of a larger creative community. Whether through performance, collaboration, or simply showing up, Meghanne is part of a wave of women helping redefine what it means to be a musician today.

Her story highlights an important truth:

The Pacific Northwest music scene continues to thrive because of the women who create, lead, and inspire within it.

Sunny Loudin

A compelling vocalist, composer, and performer from the Pacific Northwest.

Sunny Loudin — Power, Presence, and Creative Expression

As part of Let’s Talk About The Music’s spotlight on creative women of the Pacific Northwest, Sunny Loudin brings a bold presence and a strong sense of identity to the music scene.

Her artistry reflects both passion and authenticity — the kind that connects with audiences and leaves a lasting impression. Sunny represents the energy of artists who aren’t afraid to take up space, express themselves fully, and contribute something meaningful to the creative community.

Like many women in music, her journey is one of growth, resilience, and finding her voice in an ever-changing industry. Whether through performance or collaboration, her work highlights the importance of confidence and creative freedom.

What makes her stand out is not just her talent, but her drive to keep creating, evolving, and showing up.

Her story is part of a larger movement:

Women in the PNW music community continuing to rise, support one another, and shape the future of music on their own terms.

A Brief History of Women Pioneers

What if I told you that some of the most groundbreaking moments in music history were pioneered by women — even when the world wasn’t ready to hear them?

From the very beginning, women have been architects of rhythm, soul, rebellion, and innovation. For centuries, their contributions were pushed into the background… until they pushed back.

Let’s rewind.

1800s — The Classical Rebels

Before women were “allowed” to compose professionally, Clara Schumann performed across Europe, redefining what a concert pianist could be. Fanny Mendelssohn, who wrote over 400 pieces, often had to publish under her brother’s name just to be heard.

But they wrote anyway.

Early 1900s — The Blues Queens

Women didn’t just shape the blues — they defined it. Ma Rainey, the “Mother of the Blues,” brought raw storytelling to the stage. Bessie Smith became one of the highest-paid Black performers of her time, demanding respect in an era that offered little.

Their voices carried the weight of generations.

1950s–60s — Rock ’n’ Roll Gets a Mother

Before Elvis, Sister Rosetta Tharpe plugged in her electric guitar and helped shape the sound of rock. Her influence reached artists like Johnny Cash and Little Richard.

She didn’t just break barriers — she ignored them.

1970s–90s — Icons Who Rewrote the Rules

  • Stevie Nicks, mystical and fearless.

  • Debbie Harry, redefining punk and new wave.

  • Aretha Franklin, the voice of civil rights demanding “R-E-S-P-E-C-T.”

  • Joan Jett, proving women rock just as hard — or harder — than anyone else.

These women didn’t wait for permission. They took the mic.

2000s–Today — The Modern Architects

Today, women continue to shape every corner of the industry:

  • Beyoncé, turning performance into cultural impact.

  • Brandi Carlile, uplifting women in Americana.

  • Halsey, speaking openly about identity and artistry.

  • St. Vincent, redefining guitar innovation.

  • Lizzo, championing confidence and self-love.

  • Phoebe Bridgers, bringing emotional honesty to songwriting.

Women have never been supporting characters in music — they’ve always been the backbone.

What’s Next

We wrap up Episode 19 with a teaser for Spotlight: Creative Women of the PNW — a powerful event showcasing incredible female artists.

Full event coverage drops in Episode 22
