LTATM EP 19: Women Empowerment + Spotlight: Creative Women of The PNW
In Episode 19, we shine a spotlight on Women Empowerment in Music — a conversation built around strength, vulnerability, creativity, and the powerful role women play in shaping the independent music scene. Two fantastic female PNW musicians join Shels to explore the realities women face both on and off the stage: solo artist Meghanne Storey and Sunny of Sunrust.
Together we discuss the challenges, the breakthroughs, the stereotypes women push through, and the ways women lift one another up. From personal stories to industry-wide perspectives, this episode celebrates the voices of women who are carving their own path in music, refusing to shrink themselves, and inspiring the next generation of artists.
With heartfelt conversations and honest reflections, EP 19 reminds us why women in music deserve recognition, respect, and room to thrive — not just as performers, but as leaders, producers, creators, and storytellers.
A Very Brief History of Women Pioneers
What if I told you that some of the most groundbreaking moments in music history were pioneered by women — even when the world wasn’t ready to hear them?
From the very beginning, women have been the architects of rhythm, soul, rebellion, and innovation. But for centuries, their contributions were pushed into the background… until they pushed back.
Let’s rewind!
1800s — The Classical Rebels
Before women were “allowed” to compose professionally, Clara Schumann was performing across Europe, reshaping what a concert pianist could be. Fanny Mendelssohn, writing over 400 pieces, often had to publish under her brother’s name just to be heard.
But they wrote anyway.
Early 1900s — The Blues Queens
Women didn’t just shape the blues — they defined it. Ma Rainey, the “Mother of the Blues,” brought raw storytelling to the stage. Bessie Smith became one of the highest-paid Black performers of her time, demanding respect in an era that offered little.
Their voices carried the weight of generations.
1950s–60s — Rock ’n’ Roll Gets a Mother
Before Elvis shook his hips, Sister Rosetta Tharpe plugged in her electric guitar and invented the sound we now call rock. Her riffs inspired everyone from Johnny Cash to Little Richard.
She didn’t just break barriers — she never even acknowledged they existed.
1970s–90s — Icons Who Rewrote the Rules
Stevie Nicks, mystical and fearless.
Debbie Harry, redefining punk and new wave.
Aretha Franklin, the voice of civil rights — demanding “R-E-S-P-E-C-T” not just in music, but in society.
Joan Jett, reminding the world that women rock just as hard — or harder — than the guys.
These women didn’t wait for permission. They took the mic.
2000s–Today — The Modern Architects
Now, women continue to shape every corner of the industry:
Beyoncé, turning performance into cultural movement.
Brandi Carlile, championing other women in Americana.
Halsey, speaking openly about artistry and identity.
St. Vincent, redefining what guitar innovation looks like.
Lizzo, empowering body positivity and self-love.
Phoebe Bridgers, amplifying emotional honesty in songwriting.
Women have never been “supporting characters” in music — they’ve always been the backbone.
We finish up with a teaser for Spotlight: Creative Women of the PNW — a mind-blowing event showcasing incredible female artists. Mark your calendars, as full event footage drops in Episode 22! Tune in to this episode to be enlightened and inspired!
