Episode 18: Juliet Tango, Outlaw Duo of the PNW
Throughout music history, rock ‘n’ roll has always had its rebels—the outlaws who refuse to play by the rules, who take the stage by storm, and who leave a trail of fire in their wake. Juliet Tango is no exception. Known as the “Bonnie and Clyde of Rock ‘n’ Roll,” they bring passion, danger, and high-energy performances to the stage that set them apart from the rest. Their sound? Explosive. Their act? Unforgettable. But before we dive into their story, let’s take a brief tour of some of rock’s greatest rebel duos.
The Legacy of Outlaws in Music
Rock ‘n’ roll itself has deep roots in rebellion and defiance—from early blues musicians challenging social norms to punk rockers disrupting the mainstream. It’s no wonder that so many musicians have been inspired by the outlaw couple Bonnie and Clyde, who were infamous for their rebellious, fast-living lifestyle. Famous music duos have often played with this outlaw image:
Nancy Sinatra & Lee Hazlewood (Bonnie & Clyde-inspired song)
June Carter & Johnny Cash (the rebel couple of country)
The White Stripes (raw, blues-driven outlaw energy)
Sonny & Cher (pop rebels of their time)
Juliet Tango’s stage presence and musical energy tie in perfectly to this long-standing tradition of rebellious rock groups—a modern embodiment of the outlaw duo archetype, bringing danger, passion, and fire to their performances.
Juliet Tango: PWN Outlaws on Fire
Juliet Tango is a husband and wife duo, known here in the Pacific Northwest as the Bonnie and Clyde of the music industry. Seriously, their electrifying performances torch the stage. Juliet Tango do jam with a bass every now and then, but normally it is just Joe and Ripley Ty. They got their band name from Joe’s initials (as read in the NATO phonetic alphabet).
Now, I have known this incredibly talented couple for a while, but Ep. 18 marks the first time I’ve been able to sit down with them and really learn their story. Amazingly, Joe and Ripley formed their duo by a strange twist of fate—almost by accident, really. Joe was part of a band booked to perform at SXSW in Austin, Texas; it made sense to him to book a whole tour from the PNW to Austin and back. Unfortunately, the rest of the band wasn’t interested in this plan, so Joe went looking for a new drummer to join him for the gig and tour. Joe met Ripley, who actually did NOT play the drums—but she learned how in 33 hours on the roadtrip to Austin. It was a very memorable journey, as they played at gas stations to afford the fuel for driving to Texas and back to Tacoma.
This is just one of the fantastic tales from Juliet Tango, so tune in to Episode 18 and join me in getting to know this incredible duo. I’d love to hear what you think!
P.S. Ripley was also a featured guest on Ep. 10: Women Drummers, where she and Evita from Way Past Midnight shared some of the special challenges and successes of women drummers in the music industry. It’s another great episode to check out (or revisit) if you enjoyed Ep. 18.
