Did you know that band managers have been around for centuries? Talented artists have used their services—for good or for bad—over many years. Let’s start by looking at a few from the past:
📷Leopold Mozart: The father of famous composer, musician, and child prodigy Amadeus Mozart, Leopold was himself a composer and managed Mozart’s touring schedule from 1750 onwards.
📷Constanze Mozart: The wife of Amadeus Mozart, Constanze capitalized on her husband's name after his death by organizing concerts and writing books about him.
📷Allan Williams: The original manager and booking agent for the Beatles, Allan is infamous for giving the band away on a napkin.
📷Colonel Tom Parker: Colonel Tom was Elvis Presley’s manager from 1956 until the singer died in 1977. Parker was a controversial figure and focused on movie deals and merchandise over music.
A band manager’s role is to help a band or artist in various ways: promoting their talent, obtaining bookings, and generally assisting in making money from a band or artist’s unique skills.
In this episode, we'll chat with a band manager and an assistant manager about how they support their band and solo artist in reaching the best possible versions of their talent and careers. Mike Burt is the manager and drummer of Limberlost, and Melody assisted Meghanne Storey as she evolved from a solo artist into a full band. Interestingly, I learned that you do not need specific expertise as a manager in the music industry as long as you know how to "manage.”
Mike Burt has been a part of Limberlost since its creation and changed the band from an independent musical group into an LLC, thus ensuring that all band members received a fair share of the profits as long as they remain with the band.
Melody, best known as an interior designer, fell in love with Meghanne Storey’s music as a young child. She watched Meghanne grow into the award-winning musician she is today and was determined to help expand her fame.
