NOTE to Readers:
This was originally planned as Episode 13, but Fifteen Stitches really wanted it to air as Episode 15, for obvious reasons. So Ep. 13 became a recap show—the things I do for my lovely musicians!
Episode 15: Fifteen Stitches, Fifteen Icons, and a Whole Lot of Fun
In a delightful twist of fate, Episode 15 features the fabulous band, Fifteen Stitches, and honors fifteen iconic independent musicians—because clearly, fifteen is the magic number.
As guests on Let’s Talk About The Music, Fifteen Stitches aimed to pay tribute to the Pacific Northwest's renowned indie musicians and explore the significant impact these icons have had on the music scene. We also discuss the band’s recently released album, Beyond the Wall. First, however, let’s highlight the fifteen PNW artists that we consider to be the most legendary. And man, is it hard to keep the list to fifteen!
Fifteen Greats: Icons of the PNW
Every city, state, and country has its own legendary musicians—artists who shaped the sound of their scene and left their mark on the world. But here in the Pacific Northwest, we've had more than our fair share of legends. Whether it was Jimi Hendrix redefining rock or Nirvana bringing grunge to the masses, these fifteen musicians changed the game. And just like today’s guest, Fifteen Stitches, many of them started out as independent artists before making it big.
1. Jimi Hendrix (Purple Haze, 1967)
A Seattle native who changed rock and roll forever with his guitar wizardry, proving that innovation and risk-taking can rewrite the rules of music.
2. Heart (Barracuda, 1977)
Ann and Nancy Wilson smashed barriers for women in rock and proved that powerful vocals and killer guitar riffs never go out of style.
3. Kenny G (Songbird, 1986)
From Seattle to the world stage, proving that even a genre like smooth jazz can break mainstream and sell millions.
4. Alice in Chains (Man in the Box, 1990)
Proved that dark, emotional lyrics mixed with heavy guitars could make for some of the most powerful music ever written.
5. Queensrÿche (Silent Lucidity, 1990)
Showed that prog-metal could be both poetic and powerful, paving the way for experimental artists in rock and metal.
6. Nirvana (Smells Like Teen Spirit, 1991)
The kings of grunge, born out of the DIY punk scene in Aberdeen, showing the world that raw, unfiltered music could spark a revolution.
7. Pearl Jam (Alive, 1991)
Carved their own path after the grunge explosion, sticking to their values and proving that artistic integrity lasts longer than trends.
8. Sir Mix-a-Lot (Baby Got Back, 1992)
The Seattle rapper who made waves by embracing humor, confidence, and unapologetic self-expression.
9. Soundgarden (Black Hole Sun, 1994)
Blended heavy metal and psychedelic rock, showing that pushing musical boundaries can lead to some of the most unforgettable songs.
10. The Presidents of the United States of America (Peaches, 1996)
Proved that humor, fun, and simplicity can still lead to massive hits. Sometimes, not taking yourself too seriously is the key.
11. Foo Fighters (Everlong, 1997)
Dave Grohl went from drumming for Nirvana to building his own legacy, proving that reinvention and persistence are key in music.
12. Modest Mouse (Float On, 2004)
Indie rock darlings from Issaquah, proving that offbeat, unconventional music can resonate on a massive scale.
13. Death Cab for Cutie (I Will Follow You into the Dark, 2005)
Started as a solo project in Bellingham, reminding us that sometimes, heartfelt songwriting and raw emotion are enough to make a career.
14. Brandi Carlile (The Story, 2007)
A true indie-to-mainstream success, blending folk, rock, and country while staying true to her roots and proving authenticity is everything.
15. Macklemore & Ryan Lewis (Thrift Shop, 2012)
Seattle’s own hip-hop success story, showing independent artists everywhere that you don’t need a major label to top the charts.
Next on the List? We Say: Fifteen Stitches
Everyone probably has their own list of top PWN stars—as noted above, our area is particularly blessed with talent and determination. LTATM recently did a music review on Fifteen Stitches and their powerful brand of rock, and you can sense that they are going to be the next great band coming out of the PWN.
After talking about the fifteen incredible artists listed above, we had a great time getting to know each band member: who they are, who inspired them to become musicians, how they met, the source of the band’s name, and how they see their future unfolding, to name a few of the topics. Our amazing session finished off with a celebration of many of the local groups we enjoy watching and listening to. The PNW is truly a music paradise and the listening public has so much to be grateful for!
Tune in to Episode 15 to expand your knowledge about the past and the present of the Pacific Northwest music scene.
