3 Quarter Music Review:
The Punk Talented Trio

This is a music review that is near and dear to my heart, because drummer Ali Hannah is one of my closest friends. She is an amazing musician and involved in a lot of different projects—it seems as if she is called in anytime a drummer is needed. Ali also has Basement Roots Entertainment where she books bands, does the sound engineering at live shows, and helps artists produce albums in her garage, known as the Kettle. Additionally, she generously allows groups to use the Kettle for band practices. Honestly, Ali is a badass in the local music industry, and I’m not just saying that because she is my friend! It’s the general consensus, folks.

3 Quarter of Digging for Change

3 Quarter consists of three members from the band, Digging for Change (note the clever play on names). These gifted musicians can not only crunch out the rock, but slide right into a funny, comedy-punk bit. Apparently Ali likes to talk too much between songs, forcing the other members to get her back on track and just PLAY the music, already. Their vibe is perhaps best captured by the description on Digging for Change’s facebook page: “Digging For Change is a band made up of other bands that fizzled for various reasons. A group of friends who get creative over a 5th of bourbon and create whatever happens. The goal: to entertain you as much as we entertain ourselves and just have fun!”

3 Quarter performances feature original songs from Digging for Change along with a few covers, but one of their most enjoyable actions is to combine various songs into a punk rock medley. They did this for the final song while performing live at New Peking on July 20, linking together several different melodies, creating a whole new sound that they absolutely owned. Everything was a blast to listen to, from the music to the chatting in between, and this band has an incredible stage presence. You can see it all in LTATM’s recording of the show, posted to our YouTube channel—but honestly, nothing can replace seeing the band in person.

Since usual bassist Matt is out on a book tour, 3 Quarter asked good friend Jennifer Campbell to join them for the New Peking set. She told me after the show that she hasn't performed for over seven years, and she forgot how much fun it was to play a live show. We all certainly had fun listening to them! Fortunately, 3 Quarter is going to return to New Peking Lounge on August 9 with the full band, Digging for Change, so mark your calendars and come out for a fantastic night of entertainment.

Rocker and Writer

Now, who is the missing bassist on a book tour? He is Matt Dinniman, a well-known author from Gig Harbor, WA. You can see his work listed on MattDinniman.com. I invite you to check out his work; he’s an excellent writer. He once told me that he plays music with his friends in two different bands as a way to take a break from his ‘job’ of writing books.
